the need for this research
Occasionally people have the dreadful experience of losing their beloved Birman to heart disease.
Just as in
humans all types of cat can experience heart
problems. However there is no way to do heart
transplants and open heart surgery for cats like
there is for humans.
All that is available for cat owners are heart scans.
These can tell us if our cat has a problem at
the time of the scan only. Certain heart conditions can be helped,
but only for a
while, with medication however medication doesn't
work for all.
If breeders have a means to find out which cats carry a faulty
gene by using a genetic test these cats could be
removed from future breeding programs so the
condition is not passed down to future generations.
